And let's chat. Hello, and welcome back to the podcast. Today I'm going to talk about flipping furniture, one of my favorite topics. And actually this is coming from a comment I received on social media. And it wasn't I don't think it was a negative comment. But it's something that I've been asked in different ways over the years, from people that want to start flipping furniture, or just wondering about pieces just for their own home who want to make money doing it. So across the board, this is in some capacity, I've gotten this question. And so there, there are so many, let me just preface this by saying every time that I share a furniture flip P you know a flip piece of furniture on you know, Instagram or Facebook or whatever I always get, you know, you will always get those people that are like, Oh, you just ruined this piece. And you know, which is so funny coming from somebody that I am I am rescuing pieces that are they're headed for the landfill, or they have so many issues that they're not going to when I say they're headed for the landfill, they have so many issues that the you know, somebody that doesn't do this is never going to buy these pieces ever, ever, ever, ever, when they see him in a thrift store state sale yard sale, on the side of the road, wherever it is that I'm finding them. If somebody can't see past the issues they have, they will never pick these pieces up. And those are the pieces that I'm picking up. Because usually, you know, for somebody I've been doing this for over 20 years, and those pieces still have, you know, a lot of potential and I can fix the things that you know, somebody that maybe hasn't done this for a long time, you know, thinks is a big issue, it might not really be a big issue. So it takes a certain someone to walk into that thrift store, restore yard sale, whatever, to see past all of those issues. And if not, it's just it's going to end up in the landfill like nobody's going to pick it up. So when people tell me when I'm flipping a piece of furniture that Oh, you just ruin that antique or, I have shared especially on my YouTube channel, well, social media too, because I take you, you know shopping with me when I'm hunting for pieces or whatever. The longer videos and the entire thrifting trips are on my YouTube channel, but I have shared pieces inside, you know, if I'm at a thrift store, restore whatever, then I would never touch or paint or make over or change. If that makes sense. There are just this week as I'm recording this, there is a piece at our local thrift store that is in pristine condition. Like it's so amazing. And it's a smaller piece, and I just don't have room for it. And it's still sitting there. But it's that is a piece like I would never ever, ever touch ever, ever, ever, I would leave it the way it is. But here on the flip side of that, I'm going to tell you something, as somebody that has sold many pieces that I've redone that piece, if I were to go and sell it as it is just like a normal, you know, all wood piece, it's not painted or whatever, it won't sell i If now if I added paint to it, it would sell I would never add paint to it, you know, but I'm just saying it's just, you know, it's just when, when people leave those comments, I just wish they knew the full story. Like, don't just throw that out there because it's not a one size fits all like anything, right, but especially flipping furniture, like it's not a one size fits all. And here's why I picked it up. And here's why I flipped it and I don't feel like I have to, you know, you know, prove myself or you know, tell tell the story to every you know, everybody that leaves those, those comments, but I just like to say like, this is what what it is. And you know, there are some pieces, you flipped some pieces you don't right, so so as far as so I kind of got a question that was. So in the past I've got questions like When should I start flipping furniture? Like should I wait for my kids to be older? Should I you know, my kids are just babies right now when am I going to have time? You know, why should I flip furniture? You know, do I have to have a workshop that's heated and cooled in to flip furniture and you know, so it's kind of like a where, when why? And so today I wanted to talk about the benefits of flipping furniture because there are so many that I think if you've thought about doing this for your home to make money, there's just there's so many good benefits and and This it couldn't have come at a better time for me to like it maybe that's why it kind of resonated with me a little bit more this time when I got this this comment question is because I have been searching for furniture for our home for different areas in our home. And I have been to every I have been to furniture stores I've been to like, you know, a TJ Maxx home goods, I've looked online, you just cannot buy furniture like they used to make it anymore. I'm just I'm, it's hard, it's really hard. If you you know, just want to head out to a store and buy it so that I love to use older pieces, real wood pieces, you know, pieces that were made really well back in the day, because I know it's a good investment. So I just want to share a couple of what do I have here. Five, just five benefits of flipping furniture. And I just hope it encourages you to either think about buying from somebody that's flipped furniture, think about maybe heading out and finding a piece to flip on your own. But there's so many benefits. Number one, the potential profit that you can make from flipping, flipping furniture. That is something that I learned after I started flipping furniture for our first home because our budget would not allow me to buy new. So I had to get creative and flipping furniture was how I furnished our home. And then it quickly snowballed into friends and family. Can you paint this wait that piece you just did, can I buy that and then I started selling pieces on the side. And now I teach people how to grow a business flipping furniture. So it's kind of just like evolved into this thing. But I know nurses and teachers and that have left their full time jobs and they're making more money flipping furniture. So there is a huge potential for profit. In flipping furniture. There are people that do it, just you know, I coach people that do it as a side hustle, I coach people that don't want to work 40 hours a week, they just want to put you know, like 20 hours a week into it, I have people that want to go all the way and they're working, you know, making a full time that is their 40 hour work week. But so there's a broad range of, you know, I have had people that want to pay off just you know, like it's a college loan, they want to pay off, I've had moms who want to just pay for like ballet lessons, or soccer lessons or just contribute a little bit, it might be a stay at home mom that's looking for a creative outlet and just wants to add to the, you know, the family budget, maybe it's just to pay for groceries and gas right now. I've had college students that want extra money, they are flipping furniture, like it's so much fun to me, retired people. I'm amazed at the amount of retired people that have reached out to me to flip furniture and just to make some, you know, extra side money and fun money and but it goes beyond that. It's not just a little bit of you know, Oh $100 Here and there, like you can really make, you know, some money flipping furniture. So that that's number one, if you're looking to sell for it, or sell your pieces that you're flipping creativity, that's what keeps me coming back and back and back, when I see a piece that I know has tons of potential. And again, I know that nobody else that's you know, somebody that hasn't done this, I guess I should say walking by it will look right by it. Because it may be have you know the veneers missing, there might be a caster missing, the knobs aren't all there, the knobs don't match. You know, there's water stains on the top, you know, whatever it is, I see tons of potential and I I've told Matt this if we won the lottery, and he says the same thing, like we would still shop this way, we would still love to do projects. And so the creativity and just being able to bring that piece back to life for years to come. It's hands down. My favorite thing about it so I just it's just like the satisfying process and it gets easier and easier, the more you do it. And it's just super fun. Sustainability, of course, right. Buying used and then flipping it to exactly your style or exactly like what you're looking for. It reduces the demand of new furniture, right? And so it just it conserves resources reduces waste, like it's a huge, you know, sustainability is a huge thing for flipping furniture and finding pieces that way instead of buying new, which kind of I love that about it, like it's not, you know, without even thinking about it. It does do that it's but I just wish more and more pieces could be saved from the landfill.
Because I know that, you know, a lot of like, like I said, a lot of people just look right past them and then they just they don't sell or they you know, and so then they're just they're trashed. So personal is He and I kind of talked about that. It's, it's your style, right? It's like, you know, that was my, that's how I started. So, I had this vision right after we got married, the day after we got married, we moved into our first home and I had this vision of, you know, the TV shows I had seen in the magazines I had seen and, you know, you know, I had books and binders of inspiration, and in rooms and decor and all of that. And then it was like, I would try to go out and find those things. And our budget was like, there is no way. And so I was able to pick up a piece of furniture and make it look exactly like that piece I saw, you know, on pottery barn or in that magazine, or wherever it was, for pennies on the dollar, you know, where I'm spending $10 on an end table, you know, and making it look exactly like what I wanted, it was just and then that became my, like, mission, I was hooked after that. So I would find a ton of inspiration. And then my, my goal was to find something similar, and then make it look just like that, like, that's another part of the creativity that brings me back over and over and over again, because I like saving money. It's like my, I'm the saver Max's spender. And so if I can save money doing something, or getting something I want, or, you know, the I'm gonna do that. And so it becomes an obsession to me. And so being able to get the exact size or style, the exact look, personalizing it just to fit our home in our style, for so much less like, Sign me up. Like that is where I just love that. So. And then the whole, the last one here is the learning experience that you come away with. So I think I've stated here before, when I first met Matt, and we were dating, and even when we got married, he had never picked up a tool. When I say that, you guys, I'm not exaggerating. And so he didn't know how to swing a hammer, right? You know, didn't know how to use a drill, none of the things I grew up with a dad who was in construction all his life. And so when my dad would come over to help us do things, he's like, Oh, my gosh, he doesn't even know how to hold or swing a hammer, right. And so through flipping furniture, in our other DIY projects that I share, everywhere, we have learned so much that you know a lot of things now, I mean, we're now flipping homes on our own. And so we we've learned so much and like that knowledge and that learning experience is priceless. Every flip every DIY project that we've ever done, even now, even now we learn something new, or we figure out a faster way to do it, or we figure out a better way to do it, or it's just this entire learning experience. That's fun, you know, when your kids are smaller, or younger, and you're kind of teaching them all the things you try to come up with fun ways for them to be learning where they don't even, you know, know they're learning or think they're learning and so DIY for us and flipping furniture is is that, like, every project is different. And every project, we learn something new, we come away with a hack or a tip or a technique or something that's just, it just again, it keeps us coming back to it. That's that's something that Matt and I, we love to figure it out. We love to, you know, push ourselves a little bit. Do you think we could do this with this piece? Or you know what I mean? This piece now needs a whole new top, this piece now needs a whole new drawer, this piece now, you know, so in the beginning, we were we would have never picked up those pieces, but like now it's like, oh, okay, that's all it means. Okay, we'll do that. Just because we've learned so much just by doing so. That's another great part and benefit of flipping furniture. So I love receiving questions, comments, you know, hear through email, on social media and some of these things. I just, they're just good, good topics to talk about. I get them like I said in this this question and this topic. itself, I get in kind of some different way across the board. So and since I've been shopping for furniture and you know, I keep telling Matt Oh my gosh, like it was a it was actually a dresser we were thinking about for Gabrielle's room, I'm like, This is why you flipped furniture, like it's just been right now recent in my mind. And so her art area, we're trying to do that over and so we were thinking about some drawer options and, and I'm like, I'll just go ahead and find a vanity and I'll cut the middle and then we'll just use the two sides and like we're just cuz you just shopping for furniture right now. And just it just isn't made like it used to be. And so there are so many benefits to flipping furniture. So I hope these helped. I hope you find the benefit I would love to hear if you have ever flipped if you're thinking about flipping if you do it to make a side income a full time income. I'd love to hear from you.
